We are rated as one of the top 3 family friendly pubs in England

The SUN newspaper has rated The Sun Inn as one of the best family pubs in England.

Welcome to The Sun Inn

A Traditional Lakeland Inn, run by three sisters, and recommended by Alistair Sawday.

Please note that we have completed our refurbishment and have now reopened.

Located in the charming un-spoilt village of Hawkshead, our lovely 17th Century Inn has everything to offer those looking for an ideal break or holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Sun Inn will instantly charm you. It has a wealth of original features including open fires, historical wood paneling, exposed stone walls, and oak beams, and my sisters, Diane and Emma, and I pride ourselves on making all our guests feel at home. You will be warmly welcomed and our aim is to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.

In the kitchen we specialise in local Herdwick lamb dishes: our daily specials as well as regular favorites all use Herdwick lamb reared by family friend Eric Taylforth on the national trust's Millbeck farm in the Langdale Valley.

In March 2008 we completed a full refurbishment of all our bedrooms and we are very proud of the result; sparkling new en-suites combined with luxurious fabrics and locally handmade furniture in every room.

We are ETB commended (4 diamonds) and AA recommended (4 stars).

Hawkshead and the surrounding Cumbrian countryside has so much to offer, Beatrix Potter was once a neighbour of the Sun Inn living in the adjacent village Sawrey; the Beatrix Potter gallery is located here in Hawkshead. William Wordsworth went to School here, and his Grammar school is well worth a visit, as is Anne Tyson’s 17th Century Cottage.

For the more active there are numerous wonderful walks right from our doorstep, including the beautiful Tarn Hows, Coniston Old Man and Claife Heights. Designated Mountain bike trials and tracks can be found immediately behind the village up in the woods. Wonderful fishing opportunities are also in walking distance at the magnificent Esthwaite Water, with Windermere and Coniston Water just a short drive away.

A trip here is rarely disappointing, even in the rain, the pubs and restaurants in the village are a real treat, Emma’s home-made desserts are worthy of a visit all on their own, there are literally hundreds of visitor attractions in the surrounding areas including many in Hawkshead, and don’t forget there’s plenty of shopping too. For more details on things to do click here. And just in case you’re worried, it doesn’t rain as often as you think, the green hills and meadows surrounding us are testament to the lovely sunshine that regularly blesses us.

We very much look forward to welcoming you and hope that you’ll visit us sometime soon.

Becky Woolf.
